An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, has said that the tenders for the new Sacred Heart Hospital are progressing. Speaking this week the Taoiseach said: "The €11.5 million reconstruction of the Sacred Heart Hospital in Castlebar is progressing with tenders closing at the end of this month on January 28. The HSE will seek clarifications and then consider the tenders received during February. I expect the HSE to recommend a preferred contractor in very early March and contracts to then be signed. I would hope to see work commence on site at the Sacred Heart Hospital in early May."

The event, entitled “Building a Public Health System that delivers for the West” will feature a talk from Dr David Hickey, a transplant surgeon who served as the Director of the National Kidney and Transplant Programme, on the topic of “building a coalition to fight for a national health system in Ireland”. Cllr Conway-Walsh will speak about the realities for the people of Mayo of the healthcare crisis such as MRI Waiting lists, delays in processing medical cards and broken promises on Rheumatology Services in the county while Pearse Doherty TD will outline Sinn Féin’s alternative for our national healthcare system.

New health Bill will tackle alcohol misuse

Three people die in Ireland every day as a result of alcohol misuse. Alcohol is linked to seven types of cancer, including those of the liver, colon, and breast in women. Alcohol is a factor in one in 10 deaths before the age of 50.
